Cycle Scheme

At Cowley Cycles, we aim to make finding your perfect bike as simple and affordable as possible. That's why we offer a wide range of payment options, including several popular Cycle to Work schemes.

A Cycle to Work scheme allows you to spread the cost of your new bike over a fixed period, typically 12 months, while potentially making savings on the overall purchase price. These schemes are designed to encourage more people to choose cycling as a greener, healthier way to travel to work, supported by the annual Cycle to Work Day initiative.

For commuting, many riders choose hybrid or urban bikes, but if your journey is longer or includes off-road sections, a road bike or mountain bike may be a better fit and many schemes also allow the purchase of e-bikes, although availability varies between providers. We recommend checking with your chosen Cycle to Work provider to confirm eligibility.

Calculating the costs and savings involved can sometimes be confusing, so most scheme providers offer an online Cycle to Work calculator to help you understand your options before applying.

To make cycling more accessible, we work with many of the UK's leading Cycle to Work providers, including Cyclescheme, Vivup, Halfords Ride to Work, the Green Commute Initiative, and many others.

How does a Cycle to Work scheme work? First, your employer—or your own business if you're self-employed—must be registered with a participating provider. Once registered, you can apply through the provider's website for the value of your intended purchase. After approval, you'll receive a voucher or certificate, which can then be used with us to pay for your new bike and accessories.

How does Cyclescheme work?

The simplest explanation is that Cyclescheme acts as an employee benefit, in the form of a salary sacrifice.

This means that you agree to give up part of your salary in exchange for a benefit – in this instance the benefit is a bike and/or accessories. The salary sacrifice is taken from your gross salary (before tax) which means that you will pay less Income Tax and National insurance.

It is worth noting that there is no credit check if you wish to participate, and if you are under 18 you can join the scheme if your guardian signs a guarantor agreement. Being on probation should not affect your eligibility — if you are unsure, please check with your employer.

Cyclescheme have produced a particularly helpful video to help explain this.
